View W of the interior of the smaller of two early Neolithic (c 3700 BC) buildings at Knap of Howar, Papa Westray island, Orkney, Scotland, UK: variously described as two oblong houses joined by a stone-lined passage, or a "dwelling-house" (L) & "workshop-cum-barn" (R). This workshop is divided into three rooms by upright slabs with the main working area in the middle around a central hearth; there are stone shelves & cupboards at the E end. The two buildings are linked by a short passage (close to the main entrances at the W end) with a rebate for a wooden or stone-slab door on the workshop side. The rectangular houses, with their rounded corners and dividing slabs, are contemporary with & similar to the 'stalled cairn' chambered tombs of Orkney. They are "probably the oldest standing stone houses in Europe".
