It was in 1824 that William Laird created a new town at Birkenhead, built a shipyard and the new town grew rapidly. In 1843 James Meadows Rendel made plans (marked in red) for the docks and warehouses at Birkenhead, on the Wirral, on the opposite side of the River Mersey from Liverpool. The scheme was managed by the Birkenhead Dock Co until the financial crisis of 1847. In 1858 the Birkenhead Dock Estate was transferred to the Liverpool Dock Trustees, since recognised under the title of The Mersey Docks and Harbour Board who gained the rights to dock ownership and revenues.
