Villedieu-les-Poeles owes its name, "God's town" to the religious order the Knights Hopitaller who became the Knights of Malta. Henry I granted the town to the order in the 12th century, and they brought to the town, good administration and the craft of coppersmithing. The sign of the order, the cross of St. John (Maltese Cross) can be seen in many places in Villedieu.
