He had talents thatwould have made him prosperous in the commercialworld. He came behind in no gift that belongs tosuccess. But all was placed ^villingly at the disposalof the cause of Christ. Beyond this, he was a manthat had understanding of the times, to know whatIsrael ought to do. His foresight and insight andpractical wisdom were recognized by the General As-sembly, and he was appointed to serve in many im-portant capacities. As a parliamentarian whocould cut his way through a tangle of conflictingpropositions, as an authority in ecclesiastical law, asa logical debater, and as a broad-minded, discerningcounselor, he was second to none, and his brethrentrusted his influential leadership. Arrested, seeminglyin the completeness of his work, when his eye was notdim nor his natural force abated, shall we ask, Whereis the providence of God? Not if the teaching ofJesus is accepted. Is it not rather a sharp reminderthat the ways of God are beyond mortal fathoming,that they are wrapped in a mantle of mystery. In anhour like this, amidst the hush which falls on theheart, the admonition is that we must trust God. Hisis the larger view for our friend; His is the deeperthought; His is the grander plan.
