Japan, Nishinomiya, shrine. New Year. People buying omikuji, paper fortune slips, from shrine maidens, Miko, at the shrine counter during their Hatsumode, first visit of the new year.

Osaka, Nishinomiya. 2nd January 2018. The second day of the three day National holiday in Japan to celebrate the new year. People getting fortune slips by rattling a container and then taking the first stick that appears in a small hole in the bottom. The little stick that appears marries up to a number which dictates which fortune they get. There are around 30 different ones and some are good, some bad. Thousands of people visited every hour to conduct the traditional Hatsumode, first visit of the new year to their local shrine. Blue skies with some white clouds ensured the temperatures stayed mild.
