In1880 he was induced to accept the presidency of Marys, Emmittsburg, Md., in order that he mightextricate it from financial difficulties. While in Rome he received many marks ofsjjecial favor from the authorities there. At the day banquet in London in 1888, he respondedto the toast, The Irish in America. Dr. Byrne is aclear and vigorous writer. The chapter on TheRoman Catholic Church in Boston, in The Memorial History of Boston,is from his pen;and his new book,Catholic Doctrine,has received thehighest commenda-tion from ArchbishopWilliams, CardinalGibbons, and otherhigh authorities. Heis often called u|ionto state the Catholicattitude toward burn-ing questions. Someyears ago the Uni-versalist ministers ofBoston sent him aninvitation to preparea paper to be readbefore one of theirconferences, to whichhe responded
