Syria: 'The Gate of the Great Umayyad Mosque, Damascus'. Oil on canvas painting by Gustav Bauernfeind (4 September 1848 - 24 December 1904), 1890. Gustav Bauernfeind was a German painter and architect of partly Jewish origin, known for his Orientalist artwork. He initially worked in an architectural firm in Stuttgart, before learning to paint. A journey to the Levant from 1880 to 1882 piqued his interest in the Orient, leading to multiple trips to the Middle East. He eventually moved to Jerusalem with his family in 1898, and also lived in Lebanon and Syria.
