Malieveld, The Hague, The Netherlands. Wednesday 16th October, farmers arrived en masse today in a demonstration organized by the (FDF) the Farmers Defense Force, to an unwelcoming city centre. Most tractors flying the inverted Dutch flag signifying distress or resistance were barred from entering the city proper, even to visit the local tourist sites of the Binnenhof and the Hofvijver. The farmers entry was closed by heavy duty military vehicles, containers and large concrete slabs and, a thousand riot police equipped with batons, shields and a lone water cannon. The Malieveld was occupied by over (3,000) tractors to the deafening sound of air horns. The demonstration was almost carnival in atmosphere with the odd firework being thrown and beer aplenty and an afternoon of non-stop rain did not dampen any sprits. With a large gathering at the Koekamp, which is adjacent to Malieveld and the meeting point of the day. Most farmers headed for home at around (17:00) in route to all parts of The Netherlands. A small proportion of farmers plan to stay the night and tomorrow morning offer local Hague residence a breakfast by Hofvijver for any inconvenience caused. This was the third farmers demonstration in two-weeks, the protest is in response to Dutch government guide-lines relating to levels of Nitrogen. © Charles M.
