We discover soon that the stoneseed is prepotent or dominant, and stonelessnesslatent or recessive. So we must be prepared tosee the progeny of our first generation of hybridsall produce stony fruit. But a knowledge ofthe tendency of latent or recessive characters toreappear in successive generations comes to ouraid, and we go on with the experiment with fullconfidence, even though for the moment we seemto be going backward rather than forward. In due course the second generation of plumsappears with a number of stoneless specimens, thelatent character having come to the surface. Butthese lack many of the good qualities
