Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia was established in 1866, originally intended for interment of nearly 10,000 Union dead from General Sherman's Atlanta Campaign during the Civil War. The site was also at one time the proposed location of the capital for the Confederate States of America. Marietta National Cemetery was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on Sept. 18, 1998.
