Whirling dervishes, 19th century artwork. This troupe of performers are at the Great Industrial Exposition of Berlin that took place in 1896. Whirling dervishes, also known as the Mevlevi Order, are followers of a Sufi form of Islam. The order was founded in what is now modern-day Turkey in 1273. The dance is part of the sama ceremony, and is a form of dhikr (remembrance of God). Artwork from the 18th volume (second period of 1896) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
