No. City SuburbsCountry 11,019 ,926 10,546 ,958 Totals 107,420 82,741 Taken by electorates, the vote shows 79 electoratesfor the Bill, and 46 against—or a majority of ^t, HON. R. E. O CONNOR, The entire result of the referendum was a credit to thecommonsense of Australia. It is the first time since theworld began that a nation has had the sense to frame itsown Constitution and make a beginning for itself in atime of peace. There were no loaded cannons at thepolls. There was no enemy at our gates. There wereno terrible questions oppressing us ; but, coolly and FROM COLONY TO COMMONWEALTH. 47 deliberately, our people said We will federate, andthey did. It took years of labour and of patience. Some,like Sir Henry Parkes, passed over the dark river whilethe fight was in process, but many of the heroes are withus yet. And the grandest thing of all about it is, thatthe men who lost the day accepted the verdict. Therewere over 161,000 votes against the Bill ; but as soon asthe smoke had cleared away and the din had subsided,
