They went to Wisconsin in1853 ^<^ settled on a farm in St. Croix County, near RiverFalls, where Edgar, as the family called him, grew to man-. Ei)(;.\K X^ EIGHTH GENERATION 541 hood. He was educated in the common schools and at theAcademy at River Falls, worked on the farm, taught schoola few years and studied law. In the spring of 1876 he went into Wyoming Territory,having no financial resources whatever, and located in Lari-mee City, where he took a position on the Larimee CityDaily Sentinel, a paper then published by Mr. soon acquired pronounced local fame which rapidlyspread throughout the West. He was a regular contributorfor some time to the Denver Sunday Tribune, and in themeantime practiced law somewhat, and held the position ofMunicipal Judge. He was also for a time Postmaster atLarimee City. He later organized a newspaper Companyknown as the Boomerang Company, and started the Lari-mee City Daily fioomerang, which for some time, until hishealth failed was widely copied throughout the UnitedStates.
