His grandfather, William Ewing,was born in York county, Pennsylvania, ]\Iay19, 1769. He was a son of George Ewingand a nephew of Rev. Dr. John Ewing, ofPhladelphia. Dr. Ewing was selected on ac-count of his natural fitness and educationalqualifications, companion and assistant of theillustrious Rittenhouse to run the southernboundary line of Pennsylvania, ^^illiamEwing came to Fayette county as a surveyorof lands, in 1790, and located in Luzernetownship, where he died in 1827. He wasone of the leading men in the early settle-ment of the county. In 1791, he marriedj\Iiss i\Iary Conwell, a daughter of John andElizabeth (Stokely) Conwell, a woman ofsuperior mind and a most devoted Presby-terian. Their children were; Judge Na-thaniel, Sr.; Hon.
