Vanguard rocket test. One of the US Navy's un-manned, 22 metre-long, Vanguard rockets undergoing a static test. The Vanguard rocket was intended to be the 's first launch vehicle to place a satellite into orbit. However, the surprise Russian launch of Sputnik 1 led the to orbit their first satellite (Explorer 1) using a Juno I rocket, making Vanguard I the second orbital launch.
