In September, 1870, Miss Neilson actedAmy Robsart at Drury Lane, and was hailedby another critic as a true dramatic December 19, 1870, still at Drury Lane,she gave the notable impersonation of Julietwhich immediately ranked her at the head ofall Enghsh-speaking actresses. In the samecharacter she made her first appearance in theUnited States at Booths Theatre, New York,on November 18, 1872. Her success was re-markable. The following spring she actedRosalind at Booths Theatre, and on her sec-ond visit to this country, in 1874, she playedBeatrice in Much Ado at the Lyceum The-. ADELAIDE NEILSON. The Juliets of a Century 211 atre, New York. She subsequently abandonedthat character. Isabella in Measure for Meas-ure was first given in London in 1876, andon her third American tour, begun at DalysTheatre, New York, on May 12, 1877, MissNeilson presented two more new^ parts, Violain Twelfth Night and Imogen in Cymbe-line. Miss Neilsons last tour of the UnitedStates started at the Brooklyn Theatre on Oc-tober 20, 1879, and her last appearance in NewYork occurred at Booths Theatre on May 24,1880. She then went to San Francisco, whereshe acted from June 8 until July 13. Shesailed from New York on July 28, and eight-een days later she died in Paris. Such a nature might easily go to shipwreckand ruin, wrote William Winter. She out-rode the storms of a passionate, wayward youthand
