A lone Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) in the Coso Mountains. The largest of the yuccas; characteristic of the Mojave Desert; symbolic for the area. Mormon pioneers named the species Joshua; seeing in its uplifted branches the image of a person in prayer; gesturing wildly; pointing the way to a Biblical Promised Land.
