Lewis's department store on The Headrow in the centre of Leeds, Yorkshire, England, displays an enormous Union Jack or Union Flag, the flag of the United Kingdom, to celebrate the Coronation of the British monarch, King George VI, on 12 May 1937. In the foreground, a double-decker trolleybus on a circular route is emblazoned with an advertisement for 'Longleys Goodnite Mattresses'. The trolleybus (a bus powered electrically by overhead wires) is typical of 1930s public transport in British cities. This photograph was taken by a Yorkshire married couple, George and Kathleen Blenkhorn, and captioned by them in a Blenkhorn family album 'Lewis's flag that was too big to fly'. Lewis's department store, designed by architects Atkinson and Shaw, opened on The Headrow in 1932. It was one of the largest department stores in the north of England and remained the largest store in the centre of Leeds until it closed in 1991, when the company went into receivership. In 1996, the store was taken over by Allders, but finally closed in 2005. King George VI, father of the present British Queen, Elizabeth II, succeeded to the throne in 1936 on the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. Edward married Wallis Simpson and the couple were subsequently titled Duke and Duchess of Windsor.
