King Arthur is the legendary British ruler of the late 5th and early 6th centuries. Merlin is the legendary seer, wizard, magician of Arthurian legend. In this image, King Arthur of Britain is pictured together with Merlin. There are many versions to Arthurian legend and in one, Arthur is set to fight the Romans, but during the battle, he calls for a halt to the fighting—as pictured here. Arthur, in this tale, is said to have returned home to England after he learned that Mordred had rebelled and had taken Queen Guinevere. The illustration dates to 1916.
