He received his pro-motion to the grade of Ensign in 1869, and to that ofMaster in 1870. In the latter 3^ear he was ordered toduty on the China station, where he served for threeyears on board the Alaska. During this period hetook part in the Corean expedition, and was placed incommand of the force which was landed for the pur-pose of enforcing the demands for indemnity pre-ferred b}^ the United States Government.
