Winchester Hampshire God Begot House This present house dates from only 1558 but the site itself was known as the ancient manor of God Begot which Queen Emma widow of King Canute bequeathed to St Swithun s Priory in 1052 Apparently the manor provided sanctuary to anyone who had broken the law Those who entered God Begot House with the intent to apprehend or punish one of its inhabitants faced instant excommunication By the same token God Begotters had to pay a large sum to gain freedom of the city Trade between the city and God Begot was forbidden To the left of the building as you look at it is a passage way that separates God Begot House from the Royal Oak which claims to be the oldest bar in England
