His father, having become President of theUnited States in 1797, appointed him Minister atBerlin, acting by the express advice of Washing-ton, who wrote that he considered young Adams the ablest person in the American diplomaticservice, and that merited promotion ought notto be withheld from him merely because he wasthe Presidents son. Upon the accession of Jef-ferson to the Presidency, Adams was recalled, andin 1801 he resumed the practice of law in Boston. (96j. In 1806 hewas made Professor of Rhetoric and Belles-lettresin Harvard College. Mr. Madison became President in 1809 and ap-pointed Adams as Minister to Russia. In 1813 hewas placed at the head of the commission for ne-gotiating the Treaty of Ghent, which put an endto the war with Great Britain ; and he was soonmade resident Minister at London.
