China/Tibet: Cover of 'In the Forbidden Land' by Arnold Henry Savage Landor (1865-1924), 1898. 'In the Forbidden Land: An account of a journey in Tibet, capture by the Tibetan authorities, imprisonment, torture and ultimate release' by Arnold Henry Savage Landor (1898). The cover of this edition shows a set of iron shackles pierced by the handle of a Buddhist prayer-wheel. Designed to appeal to a readership with orientalist, religious and travel interests, it is ironic that it might today serve equally well as a cover for a study opposing the Chinese presence in Tibet.
