Golgi apparatus, artwork. This structure is an organelle found within eukaryotic cells. It receives proteins and lipids that are synthesised on the endoplasmic reticulum (not shown). It then prepares the modified products for transport elsewhere. Molecules are both brought in and carried away in the form of vesicles (spheres). The Golgi apparatus consists of membranous folds called cisternae, within which are the enzymes that modify the proteins and lipids that arrive here. This organelle, which forms part of the cellular endomembrane system, is named after the Italian physician Camillo Golgi, who discovered it in 1897.
