Immediately afterthe company was organized, it purchased theproperty known as the Dutch Creek cnal mine,located atout four miles southwest of Bay City,on the west side of the river, in Frankenlusttownship. The Pierce Dry Pressed BrickCompany was also acquired at this time. Thecompany then constructed a plant for the manu-facture of vitrified paving brick, the only oneof its kind in the county. In 1905, Mr. Matherbecame treasurer of the company, and in addi-tion holds the office of secretary. The com-pany mines its own fire clay and sha5e, also thecoal to burn clay, all from the same 50 men are employed. Politically, Mr. Zagelmeyer has alwaysteen loyal to the Republican party and hasserved as delegate to its State and county con-ventions. In public life, he has served asalderman of West Bay City and was one of thefive commissioners that built the present water-works plant of West Bay City on the bay shore,which cost upwards of $200,000. For threeyears he was supervisor of the Fifth Ward,and was comptroller of West Bay City twoyears. He was elected to the State Legislaturein 1888, and served during 1889 and 1890,being a member of the committee on fisheriesand others of minor importance. He is oneof the directors of the Board of
