Berlin Balloon Race, 1908. Gas balloons competing in Berlin, Germany. The main competition that year was for the Gordon Bennett Cup (Coupe Aeronautique Gordon Bennett). This is the world's oldest balloon race, held annually since 1906. This third edition of the competition took place on 11 October 1908, with 23 balloons from 8 countries. The winner that year was the 'Helvetia' balloon from Switzerland, flown by Theodor Schaek and Emil Messner. They travelled 1190 kilometres in a time of 73 hours, landing near Molde, Norway.
