Both the rheostat handle and the cord at Inched to thepull switch (in the battery circuit) should be brought through the leadscreen which protects the operator, and to a point within easy and con-venient reach. The following general considerations, however, may be ofvalue. The higher the filament temperature, the greater the discharge current. The higher the voltage backed up by the tube, the higher thepenetration. A simple method for starting radiographic work with the tube is asfollows : Take a case, for example, where the operator has been setting hisrheostat on the 10th button, and adjusting his tube to where it then draws30 millianiperes. In this case, all that is necessary, with the Coolidge tube,is to set the rheostat on the 10th button, light up the filament in the tube, having the handle pushed as far away as possible, close the main switch, andpull on the rheostat handle until the tube is drawing 30 millianip
