The Lamentation, c 1518 by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553). This painting depicts the moments after Christ was taken down from the cross. His elongated body fills the lower half of the picture and his expression has frozen into a tortured unfocused gaze. St John the Evangelist is shown cradling Christ's head, alongside the virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. Joseph of Arimathaea is in the background. He got permission from the Romans to take down the body of Christ.
