View of the Rural Parish Church, Grave Yard in the Village of Saint Giles in the Wood With Village Houses, Saint Giles in the Wood, Devon.

View of Saint Giles in the Wood Parish Church. This large and impressive village church dates back to 1309. The licence from the Bishop of Exeter was justified on the grounds that the nearest church in Great Torrington was too far for the convenience of local residents. The church was dedicated to Saint Giles the Hermit. It was completely rebuilt in the 16th century in the Perpendicular-Gothic style. The west tower with its 6 bells survived the 1862-3 restoration by John Hayward and funded by Mark Rolle of Stevenstone.
