He saw action in the Second Anglo-Boer War, during which conflict he was Mentioned in Despatches and awarded the Distinguished Service Order. During the First World War, he served as Deputy Assistant Adjutant and Quartermaster General, Territorial Force Reserve from 15 August 1915 until April 1918.
