Massive stone lanterns are a traditional feature of Japanese gardens, designed originally to provide some form of decorative lighting in tea gardens. Here one stands on the shore along the main path leading into Itsukushima Shinto Shrine, on the island of Miyajima, Hiroshima, Japan. In the background stands O-Torii, the Great Sacred Gateway, that stands in the sea a short distance offshore from the shrine. It is an iconic symbol of Japan, used in promoting tourism to Japan all over the world.
