Goethe has described the scene presentedon that day, and in memory of his visit to the town presented to the chapel thealtar-piece that now adorns it. It is very evident, says Dr. Schreiber, thatthe ridge of mountains near Bingen was formerly obstructed by rocks, whichopposed a sort of dyke to the waters of the Rhine, and gave rise to the formationof an extensive lake between Ladenburg, Spire, Mannheim, Mayence, G-rossgerau,and Pfungstadt.
