Next, we calculated cumulative species diversity indices by progressively adding the species and numbers of individuals, then recalculating the species diversity index from the pooled routes in each stratum (fig. 7). Theoretically, if one kept increasing the sample size in a given stratum, he should eventually encounter all the species in that stratum. Figure 6 indicates that, even for the five strata with the most routes run in 1973, the slope of the cumulative species curve is still positive.
