A Whig in early life, he identified himself with the Republican party uponits organization, and has always taken a keen interest in civic affairs. Heserved as warden of the borough before the incorporation of New Britain as atown; also as a member of the city council; subsequently, as water commissioner,he supervised the enlargement of the system that has given the city its splendidwater supply. He was elected to the state legislature in 1884, and in 1888was made a member of the state 22
