Acorn sprouting. The acorn is the nut of the oak tree, containing the seed from which a new tree forms. This acorn has germinated while being suspended in a glass of water, producing both roots and a shoot with young leaves. This demonstrates that moisture is needed for germination to take place. A thread is holding the acorn in place at the surface, as healthy acorns will sink and only unhealthy ones will float. Once the acorn has germinated, it can be planted in soil.
