Adrenal gland. Light micrograph of a cross section through an adrenal gland. The gland is divided into two components. The outer cortex (dark purple, upper half and bottom) secretes a variety of steroid hormones including aldosterone and cortisol. The inner medulla (pale purple) secretes adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). A prominent vein (pink) is characteristically located in the centre of the medulla. The adrenal glands are located on the top surface of each of the kidneys. Stain and magnification unknown.
