Maidenhead is one of the pleasantest market-towns in Berkshire, cele-brated equally for an endowed school, liberal charities, and its hotels, whereprovision of the best is made for the many boating men and anglers whofrequent the Thames in this district and almost live upon it. The river is spanned at this point by a handsome stone bridge, fromwhich the views up and down the river are very fine. Looking downstream the visitor marks Windsor Castle, grand and majestic, as it domi-nates the town below, while to the left the beautiful chapel of Eton Collegeis seen, set in the heart of the meads. Looking up river from the bridge, can be seen the heights of Clieve-den, where stands the residence of the Duke of Westminster. This. a^irV;- THE THAMES : NEAR MAIDENHEAD. building may be visited when the family are away, and will amply repayinspection. The view from the terrace before CHeveden House, which isbuilt upon the highest ground on or near the banks of the Thames, is veryfine. The eye roams over a vast stretch of trees, Windsor and Eton beingseen in the distance. On the left, below the bridge, may be seen the footway which leads toCookham, where some of the best trout-fishing which the Thames affordsis to be found. Here many a pleasant point may be found where the angler, according to Pope, may Take his silent standIntent, his angle trembling in his hand. Lender Maidenhead Bridge one of the clearest echoes to be found onthe Thames may be awakened. It was here, at the Greyhound Inn, thatCharles I., after six years separation, was allo^ved to see his children. 172 ^ rD^- MARLOW. Great Marlow, a m
