The League rulethat every competitors work must be strictly original isfamiliar to all, but, for once, the Editor resolved to testthe members skill in drawing, by asking each young artist,frankly, to copy any single picture or illustration that ap-pealed to him or her; and the result showed a surprisingexcellence throughout, and, in some instances, a remark-able ability. The subjects chosen ranged from well-knownpaintings to illustrations in books and periodicals ; quitea number, indeed, selected illustrations that had appearedin St. Nicholas itself. How well they reproduced theseis manifest in the few examples that we are able to print. P in the following pages. For not only the pose and actionof the figures in the original pictures, but the spirit andthe facial expression are preserved with a faithfulness andskill that are worthy of all praise. The young photographers, too, found In Haste acongenial subject, and they furnished many admirable va-riations to fit this title — from pictures ofevery-day life, to exciting races between men or horses,and even to such a pretty illustration of in haste as thewaters of a brook rushing over the stones. It is a pleasure, too, to see how many meanings the boyand girl rhymers have found in Hope, and the wealthof fancy that the theme inspired. And the League mem-bers will be glad, in this midwinter season, to take a re-trospect of summer holiday travels or incidents in theyoung prose-writers accounts of what most interestedthem in their vacations.
