ONY A]SD AS A STATE 245 sey City, Hobokens census was first taken by theUnited States government in 1850, when the citywas credited with twenty-six hundred ten years this had risen to nine thousand sixhundred, an increase of two hundred and sixty-twoper cent., the largest percentage gain ever madeby any city in New Jersey during eighty years,except by Jersey City in the same decade and byAthmtic City of four hundred and twenty-fiveper cent, between 1870 and 1880. In 1870 Ho-boken was credited with a population of twen-ty thousand, an increase of one hundred andeighty-two per cent. In 1880 there were thirty-onethousand inhabitants of the city, in 1890 forty-three thousand six hundred, in 1900 sixty thou-sand. Bayonnes inhabitants were first recorded in thefederal census in 1870, when the town had aboutfour thousand people. This in 1880 was increasedto nine thousand, in 1890 to nineteen
