Bladder wrack, light micrograph. Transverse section through a strand of bladder wrack (Fucus vesiculosa), showing two female conceptacles. These contain oogonia (oval orange shapes) between hair-like structures (paraphyses). Each oogonia contains an egg. Some of the eggs have been fertilised by spermatozoids (male reproductive cells). The fertilised eggs are growing and dividing to form new bladder wrack plants. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
