View of the Oxford Canal from Hillmorton locks, near Rugby in the English Midlands.
Hillmorton Locks on the Oxford Canal are manned and run by local volunteers from the Canal and River Trust Volunteer Lock Keepers. The canal itself was started in 1769. The canal were built to transport goods cheaply and efficiently. However during the 19th century railways were soon to rival the canals as carriers of freight. The Oxford Canal introduced a number of innovations to try and reduce the journey time along its length. At Hillmorton this meant doubling the lock capacity to reduce waiting time and thus speed up passage along the canal.
