They have been arranged with greater care to comfort thanto Baronial grandeur; due attention has been paid, however, to the furnishing, andthe taste of the Tudor age harmoniously prevails throughout the Mansion. Untilvery lately, the Hall had been completely deserted by the family, and was rapidlyfalling to decay. The Hall and several of the Apartments are adornedwith Portraits of the ancient and noble Family; among them are some fine paintingsby Lely, Kneller, and Reynolds. A relic of exceeding interest is contained in one of the rooms. It is the Lute whichQueen Elizabeth presented to an infant scionof the House, to whom her Majesty stoodGodmother. It has the date,—1580,—andthe inscription, Cymbalu
