False-colour, high-speed image showing the air flow around a 20mm calibre bullet flying at 500 metres per second (m/s). The projectile's flight was recorded by differential interferometry, using polarised light with the aid of a pulsed YAG laser, in an exposure time of 20 nanoseconds (ns). The image was produced at the Franco- German Research Institute, Saint-Louis, France, an organisation which specialises in ballistics research. Imagery of this kind is used to evaluate the aeroballistic properties of new designs of shells & bullets.
