Sunny view, to Central Berlin from Documentation Centre, reconstructed Berlin Wall Border Zone, Bernauer Strasse at Ackerstrasse

The Berlin Wall Memorial, along Bernauer Strasse, was built in 1994 and consists of a 64 metre section of 'Border Wall 75' between two 6 metre high steel walls, which surround a reconstructed section of the border strip, with guard tower, and not open to the public. The inside walls are polished stainless steel, but the outside of the walls are corroded to signify the idea of an 'Iron Curtain' division. On the corroded steel wall along Ackerstrasse (left of shot), at its junction with Bernauer Strasse, there is this German inscription, which reads: 'Berlin Wall Memorial; in memory of the division of the city 13 August 1961 to 9 November 1989 and the memory of victims of communist tyranny; built by the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Berlin.' A preserved and restored section of 'Border Wall 75' rises, dating to 1983, rises in the foreground. In the background rises the 368 m TV Tower at Alexanderplatz, built by the German Democratic Republic 1965-69 and the tallest structure in Germany.
