The sky god Wodan, accompanied by Phol, recites the Merseberg incantation to heal Baler's horse.

According to Norse mythology, Balder (also spelled Baldr and Baldur) is a god associated with light, beauty, love and happiness. In one tale, the sky god Wodan (also spelled Wotan and Woutan) is accompanied by a figure named Phol (which may be another name for Baler) when Balder's horse dislocates its foot when it is riding through a forest. Wodan recites the Merseberg incantation to heal a horse. Watching the process are the three goddesses mentioned in the incantation: Sinthgunt, Sunna, and Frija.
