Galveston has a population of about40,000, and is one of the busiest cities in the country for itssize. It has an immense foreign and interior trade and isespecially notable for its cotton exports. The level land onwhich the city is laid out and the width of the streets enablethe cars to> keep up a fairly fast schedule at an economical. SINGLE-TRUCK CAR FOR THE GALVESTON ELECTRIC CO. consumption of power. The climate is excellent for most ofthe year, with a short rainy period in the winter season. The type of car shown has been in standard use on theGalveston lines for a number of years. The length of thebody is 20 ft., and over the vestibules, 29 ft. 5 ins.; widthover the sills and the panels, 6 ft. 3 ins., and over the postsat the belt, 7 ft. 6 ins.; sweep of the posts, 8 ft.; distance be-tween the centers of the posts, 2 ft. gl/2 ins; height from thefloor to the ceiling, 8 ft. t,H ins-1 height from the rails to thesills, 2 ft. 2^6 ins.; from the sills over the trolley board, 9 ^ ins. The platform steps are 14^ ins. from the rails, andfrom the step to the platform, 12 ins. The interiors are fin- ished in cherry with ceilings of decorated birch. Longitu-dinal seats of spring cane are used and the sashes drop intoside walls in the usual manner. The trucks are the type with 7-ft. 6-in. wheel base, 33-in.
