The head and upper neck is abrownish red with a patch of white on the throatand chin, this shading gradually into the red-dish color of the head.

A white patch inthe wing. Feet, iris and bill as in the male females of this and the preceding speciesare very similar in their dress but may usuallybe distinguished by their size, the female ofthis bird being much smaller and lacking muchof the delicate salmon tinge on the under parts,but if there is any doubt the position of thenostril will show to which species a specimen. HOODED MERGANSER 415 belongs, the Goosanders being placed near themiddle of the bill and that of the present speciesbeing placed near the base. The length of this species is from twenty-two to twenty-four inches; its extent fromthirty-three to thirty-five inches. Weight fromtwo to two and one-half pounds. Most of the Shelldrakes nest well beyond ourborders, but breeding birds of this species arenot uncommon in Maine. It is found also innorthern Europe and Asia. HOODED MERGANSER. (Lophodytes cucullatus.) The smallest and most strikingly markedspecies of the family which we have in NorthAmerica is our beautiful little Hooded Mergan-ser. In New England this is the least commonof our Shelldrakes, and this species is foundonly in North America. In many localities of the south and west thisbird is called the Wood Duck.
