On Thurfday the 3d, as Mr. Banks and theDodor were 2:oino; along the fliore to the north-ward, with a defign to purchafe flock, theymet with a company of dancers, who retardedthe progrefs of their excurfion near two hours, andafforded them much diverfion. The companywas compofed of fix men and two women dan-cers, with three drums. They were informed,that thefe dancers were fome of the principalpeople of the ifland, and though they werean itinerant troop, they did not, like the ftroll-5ng parties of Otaheite, receive any gratuityfrom the by-ftandcrs. The women wore a con-fiderable quantity of Tamou, or plaited hair,ornamented wi-h the flowers of the cape jefTa-mine, which were Ituck in with talte, and made an J. The womens necks,breads and arms were naked j the other partsof the body were covered with black cloth,which was fattened clofe round them; and bythe fide of each breafl, next the arms, was afmall plume of black feathers, worn like a nofe. gay.
