Grand Gulf was, however, in con-sequence of the occupation of Port Gibson by the Fed-erals, immediately evacuated, and the Confederatesturned the heads of their columns in the direction ofVicksburg. Grant now sent McPherson toward the crossings ofthe Big Black River in order to cut off the retreat of theConfederates upon Vicksburg.
