In 1833,the vestry had granted the Sunday-school society permissionto erect a building at the southern end of the old stone school-house: in course of time a two-story brick edifice, containingtwo large rooms, stretched along Duke street toward Vine. 21 IReminlscenccs The Sunday-school Society had obhgated itself to raise themoney for this new enterprise; but falling short of their mark,the congregation in 1842 assumed the unpaid balance. In 1849,part of the church property was sold, in order that its proceedsmight be used in the purchase of a large outlying tract of landlor a cemetery; whereupon the cemetery committee purchasedthe plot of ground now known as Woodward Hill Old Stone School House: Old Sunday-School Building. In 1852, this passed out of the hands of the congregation intothose of an independent company. On the 3d day of November, 1851, a committee was ap-pointed looking to the entire remodeling of the church—awork so admirably carried out during the next pastorate. Theyoung members of the congregation, looking hopefully into thefuture, petitioned the \ estry to permit them to establish a Sun- 22 ©ID Q;rlnitB day-school in the northwestern part of the city. The school—now St. Johns Lutheran Church—opened with twenty-twoscholars. It soon became evident to those of progressive mind,that a new congregation should be organized; and while thesuggestion was approved by a majority vote of the vestry, thepastor heartily concurring in it, the matter gave rise to so muchunpleasantness that Dr. Baker was constrained to tender hisunconditional resignation.
